Rethinking Columbus: The Next 500 Years

Rethinking Columbus is a collection of essays, interviews, lesson plans and other materials. The goal is to change the way students understand the first interactions between the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the Europeans. One contributing author, Tucson's Leslie Silko, received a Native Writers' Circle of the Americas Lifetime Achievement Award and a MacArthur Foundation genius grant.

The original edition made educational history by introducing a startling new view of Columbus. The new, revised edition includes even richer material. The author Bill Bigelow, is the editor of the award-winning journal, Rethinking Schools. He teaches high-school history in Portland, Oregon. Bob Peterson is a founding editor of Rethinking Schools and teaches 5th grade at a bilingual Spanish/English school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

"It is a marvelous compendium of history, literature, original sources, commentary...an exciting treasure for teachers and students."
