The Chinese New Year Parade San Francisco 2017

  • This Parade starts at the beginning of the parade route at 5:15PM on Saturday February 11th 2017!
    •  The sun will set at 5:45 pm so it will become dark during the parade.
    • Make sure everyone’s ready for cold evening wind. Multiple layers and wind breakers are good. We also have to watch for rain. NOTE: Heavy rain cancels this meetup plan.
  • http://www.chineseparade.com  (very good information here on transportation options)
  • Meet at the designated meeting spot is in Chinatown on the corner of Bush and Grant Streets in front of the Starbucks coffee shop at 4:45-5:00pm. Will depart this meeting spot at 5:00pm to walk together to find a place along Kearny Street to watch the parade.  If you miss the meet-up and group walk, please walk to Kearny Street and join us whenever you arrive.
  •  Watch the Parade somewhere along Kearney Street  (which cross street exactly will be determined by the group and space availability as we walk together)
  • 5th grade students are making lanterns in the classroom. We encourage students to bring, light and carry their lanterns to help us identify each other in the crowds.
  • Parade Route

How can I get there?  - These are just a few options to help. Feel free to make your own plan!

  • Option 1:  Pay to park near 5700 Geary Blvd.  Ride the Muni (about $2.50/person, Bring cash) – 35 Minute Bus Ride (about 1.5 miles). Bus stops every 8 minutes on this route.  One could walk as well in nearly the same amount of time.  Depart bus near Market and 3rdstreets    This option has you parking outside of the very busy parade area and close to Dragon Beaux restaurant for eating before or after the parade.

  • Option 2:  Pay for on street parking near Fremont and Beale Streets (close to the Embarcadero and where you enter the Bay Bridge). Take an Uber car ( uses a phone app to request a driver to your location and requires you to enter a credit card number to pay),  a Taxicab, or walk the 15+ minutes to our meeting spot.

  • Option 3:  Drive to and park in one of the many parking garages close to the parade route. Then walk the short distance to the meeting spot (this option has the least amount of walking but due to it’s close proximity to the event, it will be very busy) Streets along the route will close to traffic beginning at 5 p.m. and will reopen once the parade has passed and the route has been cleaned. Market Street between Second and Fremont Streets and Second Street between Market and Mission Streets will be closed beginning at 4 p.m. to accommodate the parade staging area. Market Street cross traffic will be allowed until 5 p.m.

This location is a good place to share a meal before the parade as well as after.

My daughter was given a series of riding lessons that have now begun. They are scheduled on Saturdays. I still plan on going to the parade, but due to her lessons, I will not be able to bring my family. :-(

I just called the Sutter-Stockton Garage at Union Square to reserve a parking space. They said there's no need to reserve, and that they have plenty of room. I asked if it would fill up later due to the parade, and he repeated they have plenty of room. Hope that hold true. See you there...
