11. Botany II: Flowering Plants
In fifth grade the scientific focus turns to botany. With increasing scientific rigor students examine the various plant and plant-like phyla. A new respect for scientific accuracy is encouraged through direct and detailed observations. The use of accurate scientific terminology, including Latin and Greek roots is introduced.
In the first of the two botany blocks we focused on the non-flowering plants and similar life forms, such as fungi, algae, ferns, mosses, lichen and the conifers. In this second block we focus on the flowering plants--the monocotyledons and dicotyledons. This year we will also study mathematical geometric drawing with a focus on naturally occurring patterns.
